Getting a Medical Certificate in Almada

Almada sits directly across the Tagus from Lisbon, connected to the capital by the 25 de Abril Bridge and by ferry, and for most practical employment purposes it functions as part of the wider Lisbon metropolitan area — a large share of Almada residents commute into Lisbon for work rather than working locally.

The municipality is also home to the Cristo Rei monument overlooking the river, a well-known landmark on the south bank, alongside its own local employer base in services, retail and administration. Whichever side of the Tagus someone actually works on, the statutory position under Segurança Social is the same.

There is no Almada practice behind this: the assessment happens online, carried out by a doctor registered to assess cases in Portugal, whether you work locally or commute across the river into Lisbon. Crossing the bridge or catching the ferry to see someone in person is not part of the process.

Public healthcare in Almada runs through the Unidade Local de Saúde de Almada-Seixal, formed in the 2024 SNS reorganisation, which brought Hospital Garcia de Orta in Pragal together with the area's health centres under one body. Garcia de Orta serves roughly 350,000 residents across Almada and Seixal, and a few of its specialties — neonatology and neurosurgery among them — take referrals from the whole Setúbal district. Family-doctor coverage on this side of the river is middling rather than good: SNS transparency data for June 2026 records 383,167 people registered with primary care across ULS Almada-Seixal, of whom 70,769 had no assigned médico de família. That is roughly 18 in every 100 registered users, against a national figure of about 15 percent. If you are in that group there is no family practice to ring for routine paperwork, which is the specific gap an online assessment tends to fill.

Reaching an appointment from Almada is its own obstacle, and the detail people underestimate is the interchanges rather than the river crossing itself. Almada runs its own light rail network, the Metro Transportes do Sul, which feeds into the Fertagus suburban line, so a single trip to a clinic can mean a tram, a train and a walk at either end — a chain that works well when you are well and badly when you are not. Costa da Caparica falls inside the municipality too, and its beach-season hospitality and retail businesses take on extra staff over the summer, which is when requests for gym and club sign-ups and for pre-flight clearance tend to cluster. Those are not sick-leave cases at all: a Sports Fitness certificate for a federated club or a gym, or a Fit to Fly assessment before a flight, is a private document with no Segurança Social dimension to it.

Across the bridge from Lisbon

Connected to the capital by the 25 de Abril Bridge and by ferry, Almada functions as part of Greater Lisbon for many residents who commute in for work.

Home to Cristo Rei

The monument overlooking the Tagus is a well-known south-bank landmark, alongside Almada's own residential and commercial areas.

A mixed local economy

Services, retail and administrative employers based locally in Almada, alongside the large commuter population working across the river.

When the commute is the obstacle

Being too unwell to cross the bridge or catch the ferry into Lisbon is a reasonable reason to use an online assessment instead of arranging an in-person appointment first.

All Certificate Types Available in Portugal

Every certificate type is reviewed by a licensed physician registered to assess cases in Portugal before it is issued. Choose the certificate that matches your situation, or get in touch if you're unsure which one applies. Each type is priced separately because the questions a doctor needs to review differ: a sports fitness assessment, for example, covers different ground than a short sick-leave request.

How It Works in Almada

  1. Complete assessment

Takes about 3-5 minutes. Select the certificate type you need, confirm Portugal as your country, and answer the relevant health questions honestly and in detail: the more context you give, the easier it is for the doctor to assess your case. No payment is taken at this stage.

  2. Licensed doctor reviews

A licensed physician registered to assess cases in Portugal reviews your answers against your stated situation, generally during business hours (WET/CET), Monday to Friday, and may contact you if more information is needed before deciding whether it's appropriate to issue a certificate.

  3. Receive your PDF

If the doctor is able to issue your certificate, it's emailed the same day, usually within 30 minutes of approval, as a PDF showing the doctor's credentials and a reference number an employer, school, or club can use to verify it. If the doctor cannot issue it, you receive a full refund instead.

Who Asks for a Medical Certificate in Almada

Local and Lisbon employers

A certificate from a doctor registered to assess cases in Portugal supports the documentation an employer generally expects, whether your employer is based in Almada or across the river in Lisbon.

Your employer's own records

Supporting documentation for your employer's own absence-notification process. The statutory subsídio de doença route runs on a CIT issued inside the SNS, which this certificate is not. Confirm current requirements for your own case.

Schools and colleges

Requested for absence documentation, with each school or college in Almada setting its own evidence requirements for illness affecting attendance or coursework.

Insurers and other bodies

General medical certificates for insurance claims and similar purposes, generally wanting evidence that a genuine assessment took place.

Our Portugal Medical Team

Every certificate issued for Portugal is reviewed by a licensed physician registered to assess cases in Portugal. Your doctor's credentials are shown on the certificate itself, so an employer, school, club, or airline can see who reviewed your case. A physician will only issue a certificate after genuinely assessing the details you provide and confirming it's clinically appropriate to do so for your specific situation; if it isn't, you receive a full refund.

We don't publish a single named "resident doctor" for Portugal, because your case is reviewed by whichever licensed physician on our team is available and appropriately qualified for the certificate type you've requested. This means review times stay fast even outside of peak hours, while every certificate still reflects an individual clinical judgment rather than an automated decision.

Registered practitioners, not a call centre.

Every doctor is independently verified against their national medical council before they see a single patient - including for patients in Almada.

Medical Certificates in Almada: Common Questions

No. The assessment is completed online by a doctor registered to assess cases in Portugal, so your location within the country makes no difference to the process or the price. This page exists because people search for their own municipality.

Segurança Social's statutory rules are national, so they are the same either way. What can differ is your employer's own occupational absence policy, and that follows the employer rather than where you live.

Our certificate is €34.99 flat, covering the doctor's review, the PDF and its verification reference. A private doctor visit in Portugal commonly falls somewhere in the €50-€120 range. It is not a substitute for care — if you need to be examined or treated, see a doctor in person.

No — those are separate things. Segurança Social's subsídio de doença generally applies a 3-day período de espera before the subsidy payment itself starts, with exceptions for cases such as tuberculosis, oncological illness, hospitalisation and outpatient surgery. The certificate for the absence is normally still needed promptly; the waiting period is only about when the payment begins. Confirm current requirements for your case.

Same day, usually within 30 minutes of the doctor approving your case during business hours. Some cases take longer where the doctor needs more information before deciding.

That is the Sports Fitness certificate, €34.99, the same as every other certificate we issue in Portugal. A doctor registered to assess cases in Portugal reviews your health history and activity, and decides whether to confirm you are fit for the sport or training you have described. Clubs affiliated to a national federation and individual gyms set their own admission requirements, so it is worth showing the club or gym what they need before you request anything — some want their own form completed instead.

No, and the difference matters. Portugal's statutory sick-leave document is the CIT — certificado de incapacidade temporária — which can only be issued by a doctor working inside the SNS and is transmitted electronically to Segurança Social. We are a private service and cannot issue a CIT or open a subsídio de doença claim on your behalf. Our Sick Leave certificate documents a registered doctor's assessment of your condition, which employers often accept for their own internal absence records, and which is frequently all that is needed where no state benefit is in play. If you need the statutory CIT, that has to come through the SNS.

Requests are reviewed during business hours, so something submitted overnight is picked up when the doctor's day starts rather than at 06:00. Once the doctor approves a case the PDF normally arrives within about 30 minutes. If your employer's rule is that you must notify them before your shift begins, notify them first by whatever method your contract specifies and treat the certificate as the documentation that follows — the notification deadline and the paperwork deadline are usually two different things.

The doctor's decision is genuinely a decision, not a formality, and some cases are declined or sent back with questions before anything is issued. Nobody should request a certificate on the assumption it is guaranteed. If your case needs an examination or treatment rather than a document, the honest answer is to see a doctor in person — Hospital Garcia de Orta's urgência and the ULS Almada-Seixal health centres exist for that, and a PDF is no substitute for either.

Yes. Roughly 70,000 people registered with primary care in Almada and Seixal are in exactly that position, and nothing about our assessment depends on you having a family doctor. Be clear about what this does and does not solve, though: for the six certificate types we issue — Sick Leave, Sports Fitness, General Fitness, Fit to Fly, Return to Work and General Medical, all €34.99 — a registered doctor's assessment is all that is required. For a statutory CIT, or for ongoing care, you still need to get into the SNS, and not having a médico de família makes that harder rather than easier.
