Note on förstadagsintyg agreements: Some Swedish employers, particularly after repeated short-term sick leave, agree a förstadagsintyg with an employee, requiring a läkarintyg from an earlier day than the standard 8th, in some cases from day 1. This is set by specific agreement with your employer or under a kollektivavtal (collective agreement), not by a universal rule, so check your own employment terms for what applies to you.

Taken together, these rules generally form a three-stage system. In stage one, covering the first 7 calendar days, you report your own sickness absence to your employer as a sjukanmälan and no certificate is typically needed. In stage two, from day 8 through day 14, your employer generally continues to pay sjuklön, but now expects a läkarintyg from a doctor confirming your reduced ability to work. In stage three, from day 15 onward, responsibility for sickness benefit generally passes to Försäkringskassan, which may ask for further medical documentation directly from you or your doctor as your absence continues.

The exact percentage of salary paid as sjuklön, and the precise documentation Försäkringskassan requests once it takes over, are set by law and can be affected by any collective agreement (kollektivavtal) that applies to your workplace.
