Getting a Medical Certificate in Paris

Paris is France's capital and by far its largest employer base, spanning the finance and insurance firms around La Défense, the luxury and fashion houses headquartered across the city, a fast-growing technology sector, and national government and its agencies. That range means sickness-absence practices differ from one Paris employer to the next, even though the underlying legal position is identical everywhere in France: no self-certification period, and an arrêt de travail generally needed from the first day of absence.

The city is also home to a huge student population, between the Sorbonne, Sciences Po and the wider Paris university system. Illness affecting exams, coursework or an internship is usually handled through each institution's own mitigating-circumstances process, with its own evidence requirements, so it's worth checking what your specific department asks for rather than assuming.

There's no clinic to walk into in Paris for this: the whole assessment happens online, and a doctor registered to assess cases in France reviews your case the same way wherever in the country you actually are.

Paris sits inside the largest hospital system in the country — the Assistance publique–Hôpitaux de Paris runs dozens of hospitals and employs in the order of 100,000 staff — and yet routine appointment access is a separate problem from hospital capacity. Île-de-France had around 188 doctors in liberal practice per 100,000 inhabitants at 1 January 2025 on CARMF figures, barely above the national liberal average and well below Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur's 242, which surprises people who assume the capital is the best-served part of France. Nationally, roughly 6.7 million people had no declared médecin traitant in 2025. That matters here for a specific legal reason: an arrêt de travail prescribed through télémédecine cannot exceed three days unless the prescriber is your own médecin traitant or referring midwife, so whether you have one changes what any remote doctor can issue for you.

The practical squeeze in Paris is usually the clock rather than the diagnosis. You are expected to get your absence document to your employer within 48 hours, and if your workplace is somewhere like La Défense — around 180,000 employees across roughly 3,600 companies, reached mostly by RER A, metro line 1 and the T2 — 'I couldn't get an appointment' is rarely accepted as the reason it arrived late. It is also worth knowing that CPAM's daily sickness benefit only starts after a three-day waiting period, so for a one-to-three-day absence the Assurance Maladie pays nothing whichever route issued the document. In that window the document's real job is justifying the absence to your employer under your contract or convention collective.

A huge and varied employer base

Finance and insurance around La Défense, luxury and fashion houses across the city, a growing tech sector, and national government. Sickness-absence procedures vary by employer; the requirement for an arrêt de travail from day one does not.

The Sorbonne, Sciences Po and beyond

Paris has one of the largest student populations in the country. Each institution runs its own process for illness affecting exams or coursework, with its own evidence requirements — check your department's wording first.

Government and public administration

A large share of national government and public-sector employment is based in Paris. Absence documentation generally follows the same national arrêt de travail requirement as anywhere else in France.

When getting seen quickly is the obstacle

If you're too unwell to arrange a same-day appointment across the city, an online assessment is a reasonable way to get an arrêt de travail issued without adding a journey to an already difficult day.

All Certificate Types Available in France

Every certificate type is reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in France. Choose the one that matches your situation.

How It Works in Paris

  1. Complete assessment

3-5 minutes. Select your certificate type, confirm France as your country, and answer relevant health questions about your symptoms, the absence or activity involved, and any relevant medical history. No payment is taken at this stage.

  2. A doctor registered to assess cases in France reviews

Your case is reviewed against French requirements (including, for sick leave, whether a first-intention teleconsultation limit applies), generally during business hours Monday-Friday. The doctor may request more information, such as clarifying symptoms or duration, before deciding.

  3. Receive your PDF

Emailed same day, usually within 30 minutes of approval, carrying the doctor's credentials and a verification reference so employers, clubs, or airlines can confirm authenticity independently.

Who Asks for a Medical Certificate in Paris

Paris employers

France has no self-certification period, so an arrêt de travail is generally expected from the first day of any sickness absence. Ours is issued through a first-intention teleconsultation, which covers an initial period of around 3 days; a longer or renewed absence generally needs a follow-up with your own doctor or a longer consultation — see the national legal snapshot for the full detail.

Universities and grandes écoles

Commonly requested as supporting documentation for exam or coursework mitigation. Each institution — the Sorbonne, Sciences Po and others — sets its own evidence requirements, so check your department's wording first.

Sports clubs

A certificat médical de non contre-indication is commonly required for club membership and competition registration in Paris, particularly for contact or endurance sports. Requirements are set by the individual club or federation.

Airlines from Paris airports

Fit-to-fly certificates for travel from Charles de Gaulle or Orly after surgery, illness or during later pregnancy. Requirements differ by airline and by how recent the procedure is, so confirm with the airline directly as well.

Medical Certificates in Paris: Common Questions

No. The assessment is online and reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in France, so your location within the country makes no difference to the process or the price. This page exists because people search for their own city.

Our certificate is €34.99 flat, covering the doctor's review, the PDF and its verification reference. A typical private in-person doctor visit in France commonly falls in the €50-€120 range. That said, a certificate isn't a substitute for care — if you need to be examined or treated, see a doctor in person.

It covers an initial period of around 3 days, the limit that applies to an arrêt de travail issued through a first-intention teleconsultation — a consultation with a doctor who isn't your usual one, which is what this service provides. If your absence needs to run longer than that, or you need a renewal, that generally requires a follow-up assessment with your own treating doctor or a longer consultation. See the national legal snapshot for the full framework.

Not in France. Unlike some other countries, France has no self-certification period: an arrêt de travail is generally required from the first day of any sickness absence, however short, whichever Paris employer you work for.

It can support one, but each institution sets its own evidence requirements and some ask for specific wording. Check what your department actually requires before requesting the certificate, and tell us who it's for.

€34.99, and that is the same figure for all six types we assess — sick leave, sports fitness, general fitness, fit to fly, return to work and general medical. There is no Paris surcharge and no per-type pricing; the price covers the doctor's review, the PDF and its verification reference. If the doctor decides your case does not support a certificate, you are not issued one.

That 48-hour window is the standard French expectation for getting your absence document to your employer, and it is the main reason people look for an online route at all. Approved certificates are issued the same day, which comfortably fits inside it. Be aware that the deadline still runs from the first day of absence, not from when you got round to requesting anything, so submitting early in the day is worth more than choosing any particular provider.

This is worth being straight about. French statutory sick pay runs on the avis d'arrêt de travail, which a prescriber either transmits to CPAM electronically or issues on the secure Cerfa paper form. A doctor-issued certificate obtained online is supporting medical documentation for your employer; it is not itself a CPAM claim, and where daily benefits are the point you need the avis route from a prescriber who transmits it. For a short absence inside CPAM's three-day waiting period no benefit is payable anyway, which is exactly the situation most people on this page are in.

No provider can promise any given employer will accept any given document, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. What helps is knowing what your employer actually wants before you pay: a large La Défense HR function may want the statutory avis transmitted through CPAM rather than a PDF, in which case a teleconsultation with your own médecin traitant is the right route. Ask which they need, and tell us who the certificate is for so the wording fits.

Return to work is one of the six types we assess, but after a long absence French law puts the decisive step with your employer's occupational health service: the employer must arrange a visite de reprise with the médecin du travail, and only that doctor rules on your fitness for your specific post. A return-to-work certificate from us is supporting documentation you can bring to that process, not a substitute for it. If your employer has told you to book with the médecin du travail, do that first.
