Yes — you can get a medical certificate in Ohrid online, with a registered doctor assessing your case and issuing a signed PDF the same day in most cases, for a flat €34.99. It works as supporting documentation for employers, airlines, insurers, clubs and study absences, including if you are in Ohrid as a visitor. It is not the FZOM sick leave certificate, which only a doctor inside the North Macedonian system can issue and register — and in North Macedonia the employer covers the first 30 days of sick pay before FZOM takes over.

Medical Certificates in Ohrid: Who Needs Them?

Ohrid is the largest city in the Southwestern region and the tourism capital of North Macedonia, with a UNESCO-listed lake and old town that shape almost everything about local employment. Hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, boat operators, tour guides and the businesses around Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport — 9 km west of the centre and operated by TAV — drive a workforce that is heavily seasonal and heavily shift-based. Those are precisely the employers that ask for written medical documentation quickly when someone cannot come in, and because the first 30 days of sick pay sit with the employer under North Macedonian rules, they ask early.

Secondary care is provided by the public General Hospital Ohrid on Sirma Vojvoda, which has been operating since 1946 and covers internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, ENT, urology, ophthalmology and intensive care for the region. There is also a specialised nephrology hospital nearby in Struga. Primary care runs through your chosen GP in the FZOM system, and it is here that the pressure sits: sustained emigration of doctors — over 1,200 in eight years nationally — and a further fall in primary-care GP numbers in 2024 mean appointment waits are a widely reported barrier, named as a serious problem by 58% of respondents in national survey work.

The seasonal swing in Ohrid is the sharpest of any city in the country. Between June and August the resident population is multiplied by visitors arriving through the airport and overland, clinics are busiest, and the same seasonal workforce that cannot get an appointment is the one whose employers most need documentation. The winter picture inverts: fewer people, a normal respiratory peak, and a hospitality sector running on skeleton staff where a single absence has to be evidenced immediately.

Getting to a doctor here has a geography problem on top of a supply problem. Households in the surrounding villages travel into Ohrid for routine appointments, anything the general hospital cannot handle means a long trip toward Skopje, and in peak season simply crossing town takes far longer than it should. For seasonal staff whose contracts run only a few months, and for visitors who have no chosen GP in North Macedonia at all, an online assessment is often the only realistic way to obtain documented medical evidence quickly.

What we issue documents a registered doctor's assessment of your case as a signed PDF — supporting documentation you can give to an employer, an airline, an insurer, a club, a school or a consulate. It is not the statutory FZOM sick leave certificate, we do not send anything to FZOM or to your employer, and it does not by itself start statutory sick pay. Only a doctor working inside the national system can issue that. Where you need it for travel, sport, study, insurance or a visa, this is built for the job.

UNESCO lake tourism

Hotels, restaurants, boat and tour operators around Lake Ohrid employ a large seasonal, shift-based workforce with tight absence rules.

Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport

The TAV-operated airport 9 km west of the centre is the region's main summer gateway, and travel paperwork peaks around it.

General Hospital Ohrid

Operating since 1946 on Sirma Vojvoda, it provides secondary care across internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, ENT, urology and intensive care.

Peak-season access squeeze

Summer multiplies the population that local clinics serve, at the same time as national GP numbers continue to fall.

Seasonal contracts

Short hospitality contracts and visitors without a chosen GP in North Macedonia often have no practical route to local documentation.

All Certificate Types Available in North Macedonia

Every certificate type is reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in North Macedonia. Choose the one that matches your situation below: if you're not sure which applies, the assessment will ask enough questions to route you correctly before you pay anything.

How It Works in Ohrid

  1. Complete assessment

3-5 minutes. Select your certificate type, confirm North Macedonia as your country, and answer health questions covering your condition, the dates involved, and any employer or institution details you'd like included. No payment yet. You're only charged if a certificate is issued.

  2. Doctor reviews your case

Reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in North Macedonia, generally during business hours (9am-6pm CET/CEST, Monday-Friday). The doctor may ask for more information through the same portal, or advise that your situation needs an in-person examination rather than an online certificate.

  3. Receive your PDF

Emailed the same day in most cases, with the reviewing doctor's credentials and a reference number that your employer, school, or institution can check to confirm authenticity directly.

Who Accepts a Medical Certificate in Ohrid

The organisations that routinely ask for written medical documentation in Ohrid.

Hotels and hospitality employers

Seasonal employers around the lake generally want a dated, signed document naming the assessing doctor and the period covered before authorising an absence.

Airlines and travel insurers

Carriers using Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport and travel insurers typically specify what a fit to fly letter must say. Send us their wording when you apply.

Water sports and event organisers

Open-water swims, diving schools, races and amateur tournaments around Lake Ohrid frequently require a sports fitness certificate before entry.

Schools and university faculties

The St. Clement of Ohrid University of Bitola has faculties in Ohrid, and both they and local schools require written evidence for extended absences.

Insurers and visa files

Insurance claims and visa applications regularly need a general medical statement from a registered doctor in a defined format.

Typical private consultation costs are a general range reported for North Macedonia and vary by clinic, city, and provider.

The difference generally reflects overhead: an in-person consultation carries clinic, receptionist, and travel time that an online assessment does not. You are paying for the doctor's review and the certificate itself, with same-day delivery in most cases and no need to take time off to sit in a waiting room. Sports fitness and fit-to-fly certificates are the same price as a general medical certificate, even though they generally involve a more detailed assessment of a specific activity or procedure.

Our Medical Team for North Macedonia

Every certificate issued for North Macedonia is reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in North Macedonia, based on a genuine clinical assessment of the health information you provide and, where needed, follow-up questions asked through the same online portal. If a certificate is not clinically appropriate, for example, if your case needs an in-person examination or further investigation, the doctor will decline to issue one, and you receive a full, automatic refund. We do not operate on a pay-first, questions-later basis: no certificate is guaranteed simply because a request was submitted.

Doctor credentials are shown on your certificate, and the reference number lets anyone checking it verify the certificate directly rather than relying on our word for it. If you ever have a concern about the assessment you received, our complaints process sits alongside, not instead of, your right to raise it through the appropriate channel for a doctor practising in North Macedonia. We would always prefer to resolve a concern ourselves first, but we won't suggest that using our service replaces a doctor's normal professional accountability.

Registered practitioners, not a call centre.

Every doctor is independently verified against their national medical council before they see a single patient - including for patients in Ohrid.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is €34.99, flat, for any of the six certificate types. Nothing is added for the assessment, the document or a same-day decision, so the price you see is the price you pay.

The same timelines apply in August as in January, because the assessment does not depend on local clinic capacity. Most cases are decided the same day and the PDF is emailed on approval — which is precisely why it works well in a town where summer appointments are hardest to get.

Yes. A registered doctor can assess you remotely and document their clinical opinion wherever you happen to be, and your lack of a North Macedonian chosen GP makes no difference to that. If your symptoms need physical examination, though, the doctor will tell you to attend General Hospital Ohrid or a local clinic instead.

No. The statutory sick leave certificate can only be issued and registered by a doctor inside the FZOM system, and ours is a separate private assessment that does not enter that system or trigger statutory sick pay. If your employer needs the statutory document, you need a doctor in the national system.

Give them the document itself — it names the assessing doctor and their registration, is dated, and states the period assessed, which is what most HR teams check. Employers still set their own rules, and if yours requires the statutory national form, follow that. Location of the patient is rarely the issue; the format usually is.

Yes, at the same €34.99. Airlines tend to be specific about what they want stated — the condition, the dates, sometimes confirmation about mobility or oxygen — so include the carrier's own requirement in your submission so the doctor can address it directly in the letter.

Routinely, yes. Seasonal hospitality contracts usually spell out that an absence has to be evidenced, and because the employer carries the first 30 days of sick pay in North Macedonia, they generally want that evidence at the start of the absence rather than afterwards.

For recreational activity and amateur events, a sports fitness certificate documenting a registered doctor's assessment is usually what is asked for. Recognised diving qualifications are a different matter — many agencies require their own medical form, completed and signed after examination by a doctor they accept, so check the specific form before you apply.

You can submit at any time, weekends included, since nothing hinges on a clinic being open. The case is reviewed when a doctor picks it up, so weekend submissions may be decided slightly later than weekday ones. Anything urgent should go to emergency care, not into a paperwork queue.

Your own details go on the certificate, not the address you are staying at, since the document identifies you and the doctor who assessed you rather than your holiday location. That is what makes it usable back home with an employer, a school or an insurer.
