Yes — a registered doctor can review your case online and issue a medical certificate for Ljubljana, usually the same day, for a flat €34.99. The signed PDF works as supporting documentation for employers, universities, airlines, clubs, insurers and visa files. It is not an eBOL: in Slovenia the bolniški list is entered into the ZZZS system by your personal physician, with the employer paying an initial period of salary compensation before ZZZS takes over.

Medical Certificates in Ljubljana: Who Needs Them?

Ljubljana concentrates Slovenia's largest and most process-driven employers in one city, and those are the organisations that generate documentation requests. Lek, the Sandoz company, has more than 4,000 associates and is among the five largest employers in the country; Petrol Group, headquartered here, employed close to 5,900 people in 2025; the University Medical Centre Ljubljana is the country's largest hospital and one of its biggest employers; and the banking, public-administration, IT and logistics sectors add thousands more office and shift roles. Absence procedures in employers of that size are written down, and HR teams generally ask for documentation in a specific format rather than taking a phone call at face value.

Access to primary care is the genuine pressure point, and it is unusually well documented in Slovenia because waiting times are publicly reported by the National Institute of Public Health. Around 140,000 people in the country have no chosen personal doctor at all, including roughly 20,000 children without a paediatrician, as GPs retire or move abroad faster than they are replaced. Median waits for some specialist procedures run to hundreds of days — in 2024 the median wait for a hip replacement reached 667 days — and self-reported unmet need for medical examination due to cost, waiting times or distance was 4.6% in Slovenia in 2024 against an EU average of 3.6%. If you have no personal physician, there is no obvious route to routine medical paperwork at all.

Demand from Ljubljana peaks twice. From November to February respiratory illness collides with the fullest GP lists of the year, and both employers and faculties generate their heaviest absence paperwork. A second peak sits in late spring and summer, driven by travel and sport: fit to fly letters for airlines and insurers, general medical statements for visa and residence files, and sports fitness certificates for the race and amateur-competition season that runs through the warmer months.

Ljubljana is also the endpoint of Slovenia's biggest daily commuter flow, drawing workers in from Kranj, Domžale, Kamnik, Grosuplje, Vrhnika and much further out along the motorway network. That creates the specific problem this service answers: your employer is in the city, your personal physician is registered near where you live, and the only appointment on offer sits in the middle of a working day you would have to write off. For the many residents with no chosen physician, and for the student population at the University of Ljubljana — founded in 1919 and by far the country's largest, with around 38,000 students — the barrier is even simpler: there is nobody to ask.

Be clear about what this certificate is. It is a registered doctor's written assessment of your case, delivered as a signed PDF and intended as supporting documentation for an employer, a faculty, an airline, a club, an insurer or a consulate. It is not an eBOL, we do not enter anything into ZZZS or retrieve anything on your employer's behalf, and it does not by itself start statutory salary compensation — only your personal physician inside the Slovenian system can issue the bolniški list that does. For travel, sport, study, insurance and visa purposes, this is precisely the right document.

Slovenia's largest employers

Lek with over 4,000 associates, Petrol Group with close to 5,900 staff, and the banking, IT and public-sector base all run formal absence procedures.

University Medical Centre Ljubljana

UKC Ljubljana is the country's largest hospital and national referral centre, and one of the city's biggest employers in its own right.

No personal doctor for many

Around 140,000 people in Slovenia have no chosen personal physician, including roughly 20,000 children without a paediatrician.

University of Ljubljana

Founded in 1919 and the largest university in the country with around 38,000 students, all subject to written absence and deferral rules.

The country's biggest commute

Workers travel in daily from across Central Slovenia and beyond, so a weekday clinic slot near home usually costs a full working day.

All Certificate Types Available in Slovenia

Every certificate type is reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in Slovenia. Choose the one that matches your situation, or start the assessment and answer a few questions to be routed to the right type before you pay anything. Most requests we see from Slovenia fall into sick leave, sports fitness, or general medical categories, though all types are available to everyone regardless of which one you start with.

How It Works in Ljubljana

  1. Complete assessment

3-5 minutes. Select your certificate type, confirm Slovenia as your country, and answer relevant health questions covering your condition and the dates you need covered. No payment yet. You're only charged if a certificate is issued.

  2. Doctor reviews your case

Reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in Slovenia, generally during business hours (9am-6pm CET/CEST, Monday-Friday). The doctor may request more information through the same portal, or in some cases advise that your situation needs an in-person examination instead of an online certificate.

  3. Receive your PDF

Emailed same day in most cases, with doctor credentials and a verification reference your employer, club, or institution can scan to confirm authenticity directly.

Who Accepts a Medical Certificate in Ljubljana

Who asks for written medical documentation in Ljubljana — and what to confirm before you apply.

Large corporate employers

HR teams at pharmaceutical, energy, banking and IT employers in the city want a dated document naming the assessing doctor and the period covered.

University of Ljubljana faculties

Deferrals and excused absences require written medical evidence. Each faculty sets its own deadline and submission route, so check yours first.

Airlines and travel insurers

Carriers using Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport and travel insurers normally publish exactly what a fit to fly letter must state.

Consulates and residence files

Visa, residence and work-permit applications frequently require a general medical statement from a registered doctor in a set format.

Gyms, races and amateur clubs

Recreational clubs, gyms and event organisers commonly ask for a sports fitness certificate. Formal athlete categorisation is a separate process.

Not the ZZZS route

The eBOL still comes from your personal physician inside the Slovenian system. Our certificate sits alongside that, never in place of it.

Slovenia Pricing: All Certificate Types

Sports Fitness Certificate€34.99€50-€120
General Fitness Certificate€34.99€50-€120
Fit to Fly Certificate€34.99€50-€120
Return to Work Certificate€34.99€50-€120
General Medical Certificate€34.99€50-€120

Typical private consultation costs are a general range reported for private clinics in Slovenia and vary by location and provider.

The difference between our pricing and a typical private consultation generally reflects the lower overhead of an online assessment compared to an in-person clinic visit; you are paying for the doctor's review and the certificate itself, not a waiting room, receptionist time, or travel to and from a clinic. Pricing is higher for sports fitness and fit-to-fly certificates because those assessments generally involve more detailed questions about activity type or travel circumstances before a doctor can reach a decision. None of our certificate types requires an upfront payment before a doctor has reviewed your case, so you are never charged for a request that does not result in a certificate.

Our Slovenia Medical Team

Every Slovenia certificate is reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in Slovenia. A clinician will only issue a certificate after genuinely reviewing the health information you provide and, where needed, asking follow-up questions through the same online portal.

If a certificate is not clinically appropriate for your situation, for example if it needs an in-person examination or further investigation, the doctor will decline to issue one and you receive a full, automatic refund. We do not operate on a pay-first, certificate-guaranteed basis, and any concern about a specific assessment can be raised with us directly, in addition to any right you may have to raise it with the relevant medical authority.

You can always ask to see the credentials behind a specific certificate, and nothing in our process is designed to make that harder than dealing with a doctor face to face. The same clinical standard applies whichever certificate type you request, whether that is sick leave, sport, travel, or a general medical need; the review itself does not change based on the label on the document.

Registered practitioners, not a call centre.

Every doctor is independently verified against their national medical council before they see a single patient - including for patients in Ljubljana.

Frequently Asked Questions

A flat €34.99. That single base price covers all six certificate types — sick leave, sports fitness, general fitness, fit to fly, return to work and general medical — with no consultation fee, no document charge and no surcharge for a same-day decision.

In most cases, yes. You complete the online assessment, a registered doctor reviews it, and on approval the signed PDF is emailed to you. The usual reason for a delay is the doctor needing to ask you a follow-up question, which typically pushes the decision into the next working day.

A registered doctor can lawfully assess a patient remotely and document their clinical opinion, and Slovenian practice already accepts remote decision-making in principle — an eBOL can be issued without an office visit where the physician judges no examination is needed. What differs is the document: ours is a private assessment, not an entry in the ZZZS system.

No, and that distinction matters. The bolniški list is issued as an eBOL by your personal physician directly into the ZZZS information system, digitally signed, and since February 2020 your employer retrieves it themselves. Our certificate never enters that system and does not start statutory salary compensation. If the eBOL is what you need, your personal physician is the only route.

This is one of the clearest cases for using the service, because around 140,000 people in Slovenia currently have no chosen personal physician. Without one you have no straightforward route to routine medical documentation. A private assessment by a registered doctor gives you a usable document — but be aware it still cannot produce an eBOL, so if you need statutory sick leave you will have to get onto a physician's list.

Then follow that, because they are describing the statutory process correctly and your company policy binds you. Our certificate is genuinely useful in the many situations outside statutory sick leave: travel, sport, study, insurance claims, visa files, or an employer based in another country. It cannot substitute for the eBOL where the eBOL is what is required.

Yes, fit to fly is one of the six types at the same €34.99. Airlines are usually specific about what the letter must state — the condition, the date range, sometimes confirmation about oxygen or mobility — so include the carrier's own wording in your submission and the doctor can address it directly.

It is a common reason people apply, since deferrals normally require written medical evidence naming a registered doctor and the period assessed. The catch is procedural rather than medical: individual faculties set their own deadlines, sometimes only a few days after the missed exam, so confirm what your faculty office requires before you apply.

No — and it is better to say so plainly. Athletes categorised with the Slovenian Olympic Committee require annual preventive medical examinations under Slovenian rules, and without that official certificate of health fitness an athlete cannot be registered with sports organisations or compete. Our sports fitness certificate suits gyms, recreational sport and amateur events; formal categorisation needs a designated sports-medicine examination.

For anything ongoing, yes. Our doctors provide a documented one-off assessment; they do not take over your care, issue repeat prescriptions or manage chronic conditions. If symptoms persist or worsen, or you need referral into UKC Ljubljana or another specialist service, that goes through the Slovenian system.
