Berlin's universities and Hochschulen
Around 206,000 students are enrolled at Berlin institutions — the Freie Universität, Humboldt-Universität and TU Berlin each have between 34,000 and 39,000, and HTW Berlin is the largest university of applied sciences with about 16,000. Because they are different things. Statutory insurance covers the certificate your own practice issues, so if you have a Hausarzt in Berlin with a slot available, that route costs you nothing and you should use it. The €34.99 is a private fee for a same-day assessment when that route isn't open to you — no practice of your own, no appointment, or a certificate type that isn't sick leave. All six types cost the same in Germany: Sick Leave, Sports Fitness, General Fitness, Fit to Fly, Return to Work and General Medical.
Since January 2023 the statutory route runs electronically: your practice transmits the incapacity data to your health insurer by the end of the day, and your employer retrieves it from the insurer, seeing the start and expected end date and whether an accident was the cause, but not your diagnosis. A certificate obtained privately is a document you hold rather than an entry in that channel, so send the PDF to your manager and HR directly and keep the verification reference. If your employer works strictly from electronic retrieval and has no route for a submitted document, find that out before you order rather than afterwards.
Yes. The online assessment doesn't require you to be registered anywhere, which is the main reason recent arrivals use it. It is not a substitute for having a practice, though: the telephone sick note a German practice can issue is only open to patients it already knows, and anything that runs on longer needs continuity of care. Register with a practice while you are well, and use this when you are not and a deadline is today.
Ask what specifically is missing, because most challenges are about form rather than substance. An employer that runs absence through electronic retrieval may simply have no slot for a document handed in, or your contract may set a notification route and deadline that the certificate itself doesn't satisfy. Each certificate carries a verification reference so the issuing doctor's decision can be checked. If the policy genuinely requires an in-person examination, no online service meets that, and it is better to know in advance.
Sports Fitness, not Sick Leave — a club asking for clearance to take part will not accept a certificate of incapacity for work. Berlin clubs ask most often for contact sport and for under-18s, and each sets its own requirement, so check whether yours wants particular wording. Where a club or federation requires a genuine sports-medicine examination, such as a resting ECG or an exertion test, that has to happen in person and an online assessment cannot stand in for it.
