Three things, all of them in your own paperwork rather than in the law: the day from which a certificate is required, the route and deadline for notifying the absence, and whether documentation has to go through a named person or system. Large head offices commonly run absence through payroll software that retrieves electronic certificates automatically, so a PDF may need to go to HR as well as being logged. Ask before you are ill — one email saves an argument on the day you feel worst.
Sometimes, and it is worth asking. Employers that impose a documentation requirement from day one occasionally cover the cost of meeting it, and some occupational health or staff benefit schemes reimburse private medical fees. There is no statutory entitlement to reimbursement, so treat it as a question for HR rather than an expectation. The fee is €34.99 for any of the six certificate types.
General Fitness or General Medical, depending on how the request is worded — so read it closely. If it asks for a specific examination, such as hearing, vision or vaccination status, that needs an in-person appointment; a food-hygiene clearance runs through the public health office's own route; and a role with a statutory occupational-health requirement is a company doctor's job. Where the institution simply wants a doctor's statement that nothing stands in the way of participation, a General Fitness certificate covers it.
Cases reviewed during business hours are normally issued the same day, usually within about half an hour of the doctor's decision. Later in the evening it depends on review capacity, and a request arriving overnight may not be decided until the next morning — that is the honest boundary, so if a deadline falls at 06:00 it is safer to submit the afternoon before.
