Palma is the capital of the Balearic Islands and the main city on Mallorca, and its economy is dominated by tourism to a degree few other Spanish cities match — hospitality, aviation and the wider travel trade employ a very large share of the local workforce, much of it on a strongly seasonal basis. Documentation practices reflect that: many seasonal roles run on the statutory minimum, with the peak summer months putting real pressure on getting a same-day in-person appointment.

That seasonal, travel-heavy economy also makes fit-to-fly documentation an especially common request in Palma, alongside the more usual work and study certificates. Because Mallorca is an island, travelling to be seen in person can itself be more of an obstacle than on the mainland — which is exactly the kind of situation an online assessment is built for.

Palma is a corporate headquarters city as well as a resort one, which is easy to miss. Meliá Hotels International runs a portfolio of more than 400 hotels across nine brands from its Palma head office, RIU Hotels has been headquartered here since being founded in Mallorca in 1953, and the Iberostar Group is based in the city too — three global hotel groups with head-office functions on the island, alongside the front-line hospitality workforce they employ elsewhere. That produces two very different documentation cultures a few kilometres apart: head-office HR processes that are written down and audited, and seasonal front-line contracts where the procedure is often verbal. The airport reinforces the scale of it all, handling 33.8 million passengers in 2025, Spain’s third-busiest and fourteenth in Europe.

Healthcare on the island is concentrated to an unusual degree. Hospital Universitari Son Espases, open since 2010 in place of the old Son Dureta, is the reference hospital for the whole Balearic archipelago and the largest in the islands, with over 1,000 beds and 26 operating theatres serving more than 1.2 million residents plus millions of visitors a year. Concentration like that means the summer months put pressure on a system with no second large hospital to absorb it, and the national picture is not generous either: the 2025 Barómetro Sanitario recorded an average 8.85-day wait for a médico de familia appointment across Spain, with over 40% of people waiting eight days or more. When you are on an island and the appointment is days away, travelling to be seen is a real cost rather than an inconvenience.

€40-70 is a typical range reported for a private, in-person doctor consultation in Spain and varies by clinic, location, and consultation type. It doesn't include the time cost of travelling to and from an appointment, or the wait for a slot to become available, both of which our online review is designed to remove without cutting corners on the actual clinical assessment.

Important: what we can and cannot issue in Spain: We cannot issue the formal parte de baja for absences of more than 3 days, because Spanish law reserves that document to doctors within the public Seguridad Social system or an authorised equivalent. What we do provide is a general medical certificate (a separate, valid document used for insurance, visa, legal, education, and similar purposes) and a sick leave certificate suited to shorter absences that can generally be self-managed. If your situation requires the formal parte de baja for statutory sick pay beyond 3 days, that has to come from the public system.
