Dutch sick leave normally starts with a ziekmelding — reporting sick directly to your employer under their own sickness policy — and for longer absences your employer engages an independent company doctor, the bedrijfsarts, rather than asking you for a certificate. Where a certificate can still be worth having is for everything running in parallel — a course you've had to withdraw from, a club membership, a travel insurer, a flight you need clearance for.
