Medical Certificates in Nikšić: Who Needs Them?

Nikšić is Montenegro's industrial town, and its identity is still built around three things: steel, beer and bauxite. The Željezara Nikšić steelworks was bought by Turkey's Tosçelik in 2012 and later acquired by the state power utility Elektroprivreda Crne Gore for €20 million, with continuing uncertainty over steel production despite financial restructuring and solar power plans. The Trebjesa brewery, founded in 1896 during the reign of King Nikola I and now owned by Molson Coors, is the largest brewery in Montenegro. The Nikšić bauxite mine supplied the alumina feedstock for the country's aluminium industry, and a hydroelectric plant sits nearby.

That industrial legacy has produced a labour market with a lot of shift work, a lot of contractor and agency employment, and a lot of uncertainty. When a major employer's production outlook is unsettled, workers move between contracts more often, and each move weakens the settled relationship with a doctor that the statutory documentation route assumes. Meanwhile the requirement to produce written evidence to whichever employer is in front of you does not soften at all.

Healthcare in Nikšić is delivered through the General Hospital and the local primary care network, with the Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases at Brezovik nearby — one of the teaching bases used by the University of Montenegro Faculty of Medicine, alongside the Clinical Center of Montenegro, the Institute of Public Health and the Igalo institute. Anything beyond local capacity means a referral to Podgorica, roughly an hour away by road. For a routine document, that journey is not a realistic option for someone on a shift rota.

Montenegro's national workforce picture presses on a town like this hardest. Physician and nurse numbers remain well below EU averages, there is a documented shortage of specialist doctors relative to most of the European Region combined with an unfavourable age structure, and the country also faces shortages of pharmacists, midwives and nurses. Centralised systems lose their peripheral capacity first, so the appointment queues in Nikšić are longer than the national averages suggest.

Nikšić is also a university town and a genuine sporting town. The University of Montenegro has a campus here, including its Faculty of Philosophy and its Faculty for Sport and Physical Education, whose students need medical documentation for deferred exams and for participation in practical sport modules. Local football, handball and combat sports clubs, and the mountain and outdoor activity that the Krnovo and Durmitor hinterland supports, all generate fitness assessment requests that involve no health fund whatsoever.

Steel, Brewing and Bauxite

Željezara Nikšić passed from Tosçelik to state utility EPCG for €20 million; the Trebjesa brewery, founded 1896, is Montenegro's largest, now Molson Coors-owned.

Hospital and Brezovik

Local care runs through the General Hospital and primary network, with the Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases at Brezovik among the Faculty of Medicine's teaching bases.

An Hour from the Capital

Anything beyond local capacity means referral to Podgorica — not a realistic trip for a shift worker who only needs a document.

Faculty for Sport and Physical Education

The University of Montenegro's Nikšić campus includes the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty for Sport and Physical Education, where practical modules require fitness documentation.

Mountain and Outdoor Sport

The Durmitor and Krnovo hinterland supports hiking, climbing and outdoor activity, and operators and clubs routinely ask for a fitness assessment.

All Certificate Types Available in Montenegro

Every certificate type is reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in Montenegro. Choose the one that matches your situation; if you're not sure which applies, our assessment will ask enough questions to route you to the right one before you pay anything. If your situation spans more than one category, for example a sports injury that also keeps you off work, mention both during your assessment so the doctor can advise on the best fit.

How It Works in Nikšić

  1. Complete assessment

3-5 minutes. Select your certificate type, confirm Montenegro as your country, and answer relevant health questions covering your condition, the dates you need covered, and any employer, Fund, or institution details you'd like included. No payment yet. You're only charged if a certificate is issued.

  2. Doctor reviews your case

Reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in Montenegro, generally during business hours (9am-6pm CET/CEST, Monday-Friday). The doctor may request more information through the same portal, or in rare cases advise that your situation needs an in-person examination rather than an online certificate.

  3. Receive your PDF

Emailed the same day your certificate is approved, with a verification reference that your employer, the Fund, or the requesting institution can scan to help confirm authenticity directly.

Who Accepts a Medical Certificate in Nikšić

Where an independent doctor's report is useful in Nikšić, and the safety-critical lines we will not cross.

Industrial Employers and Contractors

Steel, brewing, mining and energy contractors around Nikšić accept an independent doctor's report for internal absence records and general return-to-work clearance before a shift.

University of Montenegro Nikšić Faculties

The Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty for Sport and Physical Education generally accept a registered doctor's report in support of a deferred exam or a missed practical module.

Sports Clubs and Combat Sports Gyms

Football, handball and combat sports clubs in Nikšić ask for a fitness assessment at recreational sign-up — our Sports Fitness and General Fitness certificates cover that.

Outdoor and Adventure Operators

Hiking, climbing and outdoor operators working in the Durmitor and Krnovo area commonly ask participants for written confirmation of general fitness before an activity.

Airlines and Travel Insurers

Travel after illness, injury or surgery generally requires written fit-to-fly confirmation for the carrier or insurer, which our Fit to Fly certificate provides.

Not for Fund Sick Pay or Hazardous-Task Fitness

Statutory sick leave needs a doctor inside the Montenegrin system, and fitness for hot work, heights or confined spaces requires an in-person occupational examination.

Typical private consultation costs are a general range and vary by clinic and location within Montenegro.

The gap between our pricing and a typical private consultation generally reflects the difference between an in-person clinic visit, with its overhead of a physical location, receptionist time, and travel, and an online assessment built specifically around producing a same-day certificate. You are paying for the doctor's review and the certificate itself, not a waiting room, and the price is the same across all certificate types you might need. Pricing is shown in euros throughout, with no additional fee for delivery, certificate verification, or the doctor's review.

Our Montenegro Medical Team

Every certificate for Montenegro is reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in Montenegro, based on the information you provide about your condition and situation. A clinician will only issue a certificate after a genuine assessment; we do not operate on a pay-first, questions-later basis, and no certificate is guaranteed simply because a request was submitted. If a certificate is not clinically appropriate, for example because your case would benefit from an in-person examination or further investigation, the doctor will decline to issue one and you receive a full, automatic refund.

Registration details for the reviewing doctor can be provided on request, and we encourage you to reach out if you'd like to confirm credentials before relying on a certificate for something important. If you ever have a concern about the assessment you received, our complaints process is there for exactly that: we would always prefer to resolve a concern directly, and treat every case on its own facts rather than applying a blanket response. This process sits alongside, not instead of, any right you may have to raise a concern with the relevant professional body in Montenegro.

We don't rotate doctors between certificate types based on price: the same standard of genuine clinical assessment applies whether you're requesting a €34.99 sick leave certificate or a €34.99 sports fitness certificate. If a doctor has questions about your case, they'll ask through the same portal you submitted your assessment through, and you won't be charged until a certificate is actually issued.

Registered practitioners, not a call centre.

Every doctor is independently verified against their national medical council before they see a single patient - including for patients in Nikšić.

Frequently Asked Questions

€34.99 flat, for any of the six certificate types, including the doctor's review and the issued PDF. Nothing is added at checkout or afterwards.

Yes — intake and review run around the clock, seven days a week, which is the main reason continuous-shift workers here use the service. Most cases get a same-day decision whatever time they arrive.

For documentation, usually yes: the whole process is remote, so there is no reason to drive an hour each way to obtain a piece of paper. For treatment, referral to the capital remains the right route, and if your answers suggest you need it the doctor will say so.

No. Montenegrin law requires a doctor's certificate of temporary work inability from inside the national system, delivered to your employer within three days, after which the employer pays 70% of salary for the first 60 days and the Fond za zdravstveno osiguranje Crne Gore takes over from day 60. We are outside that system entirely and our certificate creates no pay entitlement.

Be aware that Montenegrin employers may request a review of a sick leave case by the appropriate authorities under health insurance regulations. An independent doctor's assessment from a verifiably registered physician is evidence in your favour for internal purposes, but it will not pre-empt or override that statutory review, and it is not a shield against one.

No. Fitness determinations for hot work, working at height, confined spaces or respirator use are occupational medicine assessments requiring an in-person examination by an authorised provider. We can document general recovery and limitations; we will not sign off hazardous-task fitness remotely.

For an absence or a deferral, generally yes. If the faculty requires a formal sports medicine examination before participation in a practical module — with prescribed tests such as ECG — that is an in-person requirement and a remote certificate will not satisfy it.

For recreational activity, generally yes: the doctor documents whether anything would make normal recreational exertion unsafe. Operators running technical climbing, high-altitude or multi-day expeditions often require their own medical form or a specific clearance, so check what the operator actually asks for.

Yes — it is a doctor's report, not a municipal permit, so it reads identically wherever you present it. Acceptance always depends on the recipient and on whether they need a statutory document instead of an independent one.

No. Work-capacity and disability determinations in Montenegro are made through a defined process involving designated medical assessment bodies, in-person examination and documentary review. Nothing issued remotely can substitute for that, and claiming otherwise would waste your time and money.
