Getting a Medical Certificate in Glasgow

Glasgow is Scotland's largest city and a major hub for services and the creative industries, alongside a substantial public sector and manufacturing base. Employment law here follows the same UK-wide framework as the rest of the country — the same Statutory Sick Pay rules and the same fit note requirement — so there's no separate Scottish scheme to navigate.

The University of Glasgow is one of the city's larger institutions, and illness affecting coursework or exams is usually handled through its own formal process, with evidence requirements set by the department rather than a general rule.

Nothing about this is tied to a Glasgow address — there's no surgery to attend, just an online case reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK, the same way whether you're in Glasgow or anywhere else in the country.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest health board in Scotland, employing around 38,000 staff and providing care to over 1.2 million people. Its flagship site, the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Govan, opened in April 2015 with 1,677 beds — a 1,109-bed adult hospital, a 256-bed children's hospital and two separate emergency departments. Access to primary care is measured differently here than in England: Scotland's Health and Care Experience Survey for 2025/26 found 78% of people found it very or fairly easy to contact their GP practice in the way they wanted, up from 76% in 2023/24 but well below the 85% recorded in 2019/20, and 72% of those offered an appointment were seen face to face.

Glasgow's absence problem is often a shift problem. BAE Systems runs the Govan and Scotstoun yards on the Clyde, where the Type 26 frigate programme — GBP 3.7 billion for the first batch of three ships — has driven recruitment for fabricator-platers, welders, pipefitters, mechanical fitters, electricians, joiners, sheet metal workers and painters. A few miles away, Barclays' campus at Buchanan Wharf in Tradeston spans five buildings and was built as the bank's Scottish workforce roughly doubled from 2,500 towards around 5,000. Those two workforces sit at opposite ends of the evidence question: a trades role usually cannot be done partially or from home, while a desk role often can, and employer expectations follow that difference rather than any national rule.

Services and creative industries

Glasgow's employer base spans services, the creative industries, the public sector and manufacturing. The fit note requirement is the same UK-wide framework as everywhere else in the country.

University of Glasgow

Illness affecting coursework, exams or a placement is usually handled through a formal process, with evidence requirements set by the department.

Clubs and organisations

Sports clubs and gyms across Glasgow may ask for medical clearance before participation. Requirements are set by the club or organiser, not nationally.

Assessed the same way everywhere

There is no Glasgow premises behind this — your case is reviewed the same way whether you're in Glasgow or anywhere else in the UK.

All Certificate Types Available in the UK

Every certificate type is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor against UK requirements. Choose the one that matches your situation. Most UK requests fall into one of these categories, and if you're not sure which applies, our assessment will ask enough questions to route you to the right one before you pay anything.

How It Works in the UK

  1. Complete assessment

3-5 minutes. Select your certificate type, confirm the UK as your country, and answer relevant health questions covering your condition, the dates you need covered, and any employer or institution details you'd like included. No payment yet. You're only charged if a certificate is issued.

  2. GMC-registered doctor reviews

Reviewed against UK requirements during UK business hours (9am-6pm GMT/BST, Monday-Friday). The doctor may request more information through the same portal, or in rare cases advise that your situation needs an in-person examination rather than an online certificate.

  3. Receive your PDF

Emailed same day, usually within 30 minutes of approval, with doctor credentials, GMC number, and a verification reference your employer, school, or institution can scan to confirm authenticity directly.

Who Asks for a Medical Certificate in Glasgow

Glasgow employers

A certificate from a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK can stand as your Statement of Fitness for Work (fit note) once one is due, under Statutory Sick Pay rules that apply the same way across Scotland as the rest of the UK.

Universities and colleges

Commonly requested as supporting evidence where illness has affected coursework, exams or a placement. Each institution sets its own requirements.

Clubs and gyms

Glasgow sports clubs and gyms may ask for medical clearance before participation or membership. The club or organiser sets the requirement.

Insurers and other bodies

General medical certificates for insurance claims and similar administrative purposes. What matters is that a genuine medical assessment took place.

Private GP visit costs are typical ranges reported by UK private clinics and vary by location and provider.

The gap between our pricing and a typical private GP visit reflects the difference in overhead between a walk-in clinic appointment and an online assessment. You're paying for the doctor's review and the certificate itself, not a consultation room, receptionist time, or travel. NHS GP appointments are free at the point of use but are not designed to issue same-day private documentation for insurance, travel, or sport, which is why most people in this position turn to a private route regardless of price.

Our UK Medical Team

Every UK certificate is reviewed by a doctor registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Registration numbers are shown on your certificate and can be independently verified on the GMC website. There is no need to take our word for a doctor's credentials when the public register confirms them directly.

A clinician will only issue a certificate after genuinely assessing your case, based on the health information you provide and, where needed, follow-up questions. If a certificate is not clinically appropriate, for example if your case needs an in-person examination or further investigation, the doctor will decline to issue one and you receive a full, automatic refund. We do not operate on a pay-first, questions-later basis: no certificate is guaranteed simply because a request was submitted.

If you ever have a concern about the assessment you received, our complaints process sits alongside, not instead of, your right to raise a concern about a specific doctor directly with the GMC. We would always prefer to resolve a concern ourselves first, but we will never suggest that a GMC-registered clinician's public accountability is somehow replaced by using our service.

Registered practitioners, not a call centre.

Every doctor is independently verified against their national medical council before they see a single patient - including for patients in Glasgow.

Medical Certificates in Glasgow: Common Questions

No. The assessment is completed online and reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK, so your location within the country makes no difference to the process or the price. This page exists because people search for their own city.

No — the same UK-wide rule applies. The first 7 calendar days of sickness absence are self-certified, with no certificate legally required. From day 8 of continuous absence, your employer can require a fit note (Statement of Fitness for Work, form MED3), submitted as soon as reasonably possible under their sickness policy.

Our certificate is €34.99 flat, including the doctor's review, the PDF and its verification reference. A private GP visit in the UK commonly falls in the €50-€120 range. It is not a substitute for care — if you need to be examined or treated, see a GP.

Not necessarily — since July 2022, a registered nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist or occupational therapist can also issue a UK fit note, alongside GPs. Our own certificates are reviewed and issued by a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK.

Same day, usually within 30 minutes of the doctor approving your case during business hours. Some cases take longer where the doctor needs more information before deciding.

Sick Leave at EUR 34.99 is the one for work absence. The honest answer to the second half is no, not always. For a short absence where your employer only needs you to self-certify, there may be nothing to buy — so read the policy before you pay. Buy one where the policy asks for medical evidence, where a contractual sick pay scheme sets its own requirement, or where you want a dated, verifiable record on file. Where the policy names the statutory MED3, ours is supporting evidence.

Your registered practice is not the only possible source of medical evidence, and what matters is that a registered doctor assessed the case. But there is a real trade-off worth naming: your practice holds your record. For anything that turns on your history — a long-term condition, current medication, a phased return, a pattern of related absences — the practice is the better route precisely because they can see what an online assessment cannot. Use the online route for what it is good at, not for everything.

Largely, yes, and it is worth understanding why rather than arguing. For safety-critical work an employer will normally require their own occupational health clearance before you go back on the tools, because that assessment is about a specific task and environment, not just your general condition. Our certificate documents the medical assessment behind the absence. It does not, and should not, substitute for an occupational health decision about whether you are fit to weld, climb or operate plant.

You can submit at any time, and cases are reviewed when a doctor is on shift, so a Saturday or Sunday submission may be decided on the next working day rather than within the half hour. Plan for that if you have a Monday deadline. And a separate point worth making plainly: if you are unwell enough that you need care rather than paperwork out of hours, use Scotland's out-of-hours NHS route first and deal with the documentation afterwards.

Not as an extension. A further MED3 is issued by an eligible clinician who is continuing to assess you, and for a continuing absence an employer will usually expect evidence to keep coming from the same route rather than switching part-way. What we can do is document a fresh assessment of how you are now, which is a different thing from extending a statement someone else issued. If the absence is running on, going back to whoever issued the original is normally the cleaner path.
