Getting a Medical Certificate in London

London is the UK's capital and by far its largest and most diverse employer base — finance and professional services in the City and Canary Wharf, national and local government, a large technology sector, and the creative industries, all within Greater London. That mix means sickness-absence policies vary enormously between one London employer and the next, even though the fit note requirement itself is identical for all of them.

The city also has one of the country's largest concentrations of higher education, including UCL, Imperial College London, the LSE and King's College London. Universities generally run their own process for illness affecting coursework, exams or placements, with their own evidence requirements, so it's worth checking what your specific institution asks for rather than assuming a standard form will do.

There's no London clinic to walk into here: the whole assessment happens online, and a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK reviews your case wherever in the country you happen to be. That's deliberate — you don't need to be well enough to cross London for a same-day appointment to have your case looked at.

The country's largest employer base

Finance, government, technology and the creative industries all sit within Greater London. The fit note requirement is the same across all of them; how and when to submit one is set by each employer's own sickness policy.

A major university city

UCL, Imperial, LSE, King's and others each run their own process for illness affecting coursework or exams. Check what your specific department asks for before requesting documentation.

Clubs and organisations

Sports clubs, gyms and other organisations across London may ask for medical evidence before an event, a return to play, or membership. Requirements are set by the club or organiser, not nationally.

Assessed the same way everywhere

There is no London premises behind this — your case is reviewed the same way regardless of which part of the city, or the country, you're in.

All Certificate Types Available in the UK

Every certificate type is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor against UK requirements. Choose the one that matches your situation. Most UK requests fall into one of these categories, and if you're not sure which applies, our assessment will ask enough questions to route you to the right one before you pay anything.

How It Works in the UK

  1. Complete assessment

3-5 minutes. Select your certificate type, confirm the UK as your country, and answer relevant health questions covering your condition, the dates you need covered, and any employer or institution details you'd like included. No payment yet. You're only charged if a certificate is issued.

  2. GMC-registered doctor reviews

Reviewed against UK requirements during UK business hours (9am-6pm GMT/BST, Monday-Friday). The doctor may request more information through the same portal, or in rare cases advise that your situation needs an in-person examination rather than an online certificate.

  3. Receive your PDF

Emailed same day, usually within 30 minutes of approval, with doctor credentials, GMC number, and a verification reference your employer, school, or institution can scan to confirm authenticity directly.

Who Asks for a Medical Certificate in London

London employers

A certificate from a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK can stand as your Statement of Fitness for Work (fit note) once one is due, under Statutory Sick Pay rules. Your employer's own sickness policy sets the practical detail — who to send it to, and by when.

Universities and colleges

Commonly requested as supporting evidence where illness has affected coursework, exams or a placement. Each institution sets its own requirements, so check the specific wording your department uses.

Clubs and gyms

London sports clubs and gyms may ask for medical clearance before participation or membership, particularly for contact sport. The club or organiser sets the requirement.

Insurers and other bodies

General medical certificates for insurance claims and similar administrative purposes. What matters to these is that a genuine medical assessment took place, not the format of the consultation.

UK Pricing: All Certificate Types

Certificate TypeOur PriceTypical Private GP Visit
Sick Leave Certificate€34.99€50-€120
Sports Fitness Certificate€34.99€50-€120
General Fitness Certificate€34.99€50-€120
Fit to Fly Certificate€34.99€50-€120
Return to Work Certificate€34.99€50-€120
General Medical Certificate€34.99€50-€120

Private GP visit costs are typical ranges reported by UK private clinics and vary by location and provider.

The gap between our pricing and a typical private GP visit reflects the difference in overhead between a walk-in clinic appointment and an online assessment. You're paying for the doctor's review and the certificate itself, not a consultation room, receptionist time, or travel. NHS GP appointments are free at the point of use but are not designed to issue same-day private documentation for insurance, travel, or sport, which is why most people in this position turn to a private route regardless of price.

Our UK Medical Team

Every UK certificate is reviewed by a doctor registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Registration numbers are shown on your certificate and can be independently verified on the GMC website. There is no need to take our word for a doctor's credentials when the public register confirms them directly.

A clinician will only issue a certificate after genuinely assessing your case, based on the health information you provide and, where needed, follow-up questions. If a certificate is not clinically appropriate, for example if your case needs an in-person examination or further investigation, the doctor will decline to issue one and you receive a full, automatic refund. We do not operate on a pay-first, questions-later basis: no certificate is guaranteed simply because a request was submitted.

If you ever have a concern about the assessment you received, our complaints process sits alongside, not instead of, your right to raise a concern about a specific doctor directly with the GMC. We would always prefer to resolve a concern ourselves first, but we will never suggest that a GMC-registered clinician's public accountability is somehow replaced by using our service.

Registered practitioners, not a call centre.

Every doctor is independently verified against their national medical council before they see a single patient - including for patients in London.

Medical Certificates in London: Common Questions

No. The assessment is completed online and reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK, so where you are in the country makes no difference to the process or the price. This page exists because people search for their own city, not because the service works differently in London.

The first 7 calendar days of sickness absence are self-certified — no certificate is legally required during that window. From day 8 of continuous sickness absence, your employer can require a fit note (Statement of Fitness for Work, form MED3), which you submit as soon as reasonably possible under their sickness policy.

Our certificate is €34.99 flat, which includes the doctor's review, the PDF and its verification reference. A private GP visit in the UK commonly falls somewhere in the €50-€120 range depending on the practice. That said, a certificate is not a substitute for care: if you need to be examined or treated, see a GP.

Not necessarily in general — since July 2022, a registered nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist or occupational therapist can also issue a fit note in the UK, alongside GPs. Our own certificates are reviewed and issued by a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK.

Same day, usually within 30 minutes of the doctor approving your case during business hours. Some cases take longer where the doctor needs more information from you before deciding.
