Getting a Medical Certificate in Leeds

Leeds is West Yorkshire's largest city and a major centre for financial and legal services, with a broad employer base that also spans retail, manufacturing and the public sector. The fit note requirement is constant across all of them; the submission process is set by each employer individually.

The University of Leeds is one of the city's larger institutions, and study-related illness is usually handled through a formal mitigating-circumstances process, with evidence requirements set by the department rather than a single university-wide rule.

There's no clinic door to knock on in Leeds — the assessment is completed entirely online, and a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK reviews it wherever you're based. You're not booking a room in Leeds; you're submitting a case.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has around 18,000 staff and was formed in April 1998 when two smaller trusts merged into a single citywide organisation. It serves a population of roughly 752,000 and treats about two million patients a year across Leeds General Infirmary, St James's University Hospital, Chapel Allerton, Seacroft, Wharfedale and the Leeds Dental Institute. That is one of the larger trusts in the country, but size cuts both ways: a hospital episode at St James's and a GP record at a practice across the city are held separately, and the person who can actually produce a document is rarely the first person who answers the phone.

Leeds also carries an unusual concentration of head-office employment for a city its size. NHS England's headquarters is at Quarry House on Quarry Hill, Channel 4's national headquarters is at The Majestic, and Asda's head office sits on Great Wilson Street on the South Bank. Employers of that type run formal absence-reporting systems with date-stamped uploads rather than a conversation with a manager, which changes what good evidence looks like. Worth knowing too: fit notes are administrative routine rather than an exception — NHS England published 2,972,596 fit notes issued in England in Q4 2025/26, and the figures are released quarterly down to sub-ICB level.

Financial and legal services

Leeds' employer base is weighted towards financial and legal services, alongside retail, manufacturing and the public sector. The fit note requirement is constant across all of them.

University of Leeds

Illness affecting coursework, exams or a placement is usually handled through a formal mitigating-circumstances process, with evidence requirements set by the department.

Clubs and organisations

Sports clubs and gyms across Leeds may ask for medical clearance before participation. Requirements are set by the club or organiser, not nationally.

Assessed the same way everywhere

There is no Leeds premises behind this — your case is reviewed the same way regardless of where in the city, or the country, you're based.

All Certificate Types Available in the UK

Every certificate type is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor against UK requirements. Choose the one that matches your situation. Most UK requests fall into one of these categories, and if you're not sure which applies, our assessment will ask enough questions to route you to the right one before you pay anything.

How It Works in the UK

  1. Complete assessment

3-5 minutes. Select your certificate type, confirm the UK as your country, and answer relevant health questions covering your condition, the dates you need covered, and any employer or institution details you'd like included. No payment yet. You're only charged if a certificate is issued.

  2. GMC-registered doctor reviews

Reviewed against UK requirements during UK business hours (9am-6pm GMT/BST, Monday-Friday). The doctor may request more information through the same portal, or in rare cases advise that your situation needs an in-person examination rather than an online certificate.

  3. Receive your PDF

Emailed same day, usually within 30 minutes of approval, with doctor credentials, GMC number, and a verification reference your employer, school, or institution can scan to confirm authenticity directly.

Who Asks for a Medical Certificate in Leeds

Leeds employers

A certificate from a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK can stand as your Statement of Fitness for Work (fit note) once one is due, under Statutory Sick Pay rules. Your employer's sickness policy sets the practical detail.

Universities and colleges

Commonly requested as supporting evidence where illness has affected coursework, exams or a placement. Each institution sets its own requirements.

Clubs and gyms

Leeds sports clubs and gyms may ask for medical clearance before participation or membership. The club or organiser sets the requirement.

Insurers and other bodies

General medical certificates for insurance claims and similar administrative purposes. What matters is that a genuine medical assessment took place.

Private GP visit costs are typical ranges reported by UK private clinics and vary by location and provider.

The gap between our pricing and a typical private GP visit reflects the difference in overhead between a walk-in clinic appointment and an online assessment. You're paying for the doctor's review and the certificate itself, not a consultation room, receptionist time, or travel. NHS GP appointments are free at the point of use but are not designed to issue same-day private documentation for insurance, travel, or sport, which is why most people in this position turn to a private route regardless of price.

Our UK Medical Team

Every UK certificate is reviewed by a doctor registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Registration numbers are shown on your certificate and can be independently verified on the GMC website. There is no need to take our word for a doctor's credentials when the public register confirms them directly.

A clinician will only issue a certificate after genuinely assessing your case, based on the health information you provide and, where needed, follow-up questions. If a certificate is not clinically appropriate, for example if your case needs an in-person examination or further investigation, the doctor will decline to issue one and you receive a full, automatic refund. We do not operate on a pay-first, questions-later basis: no certificate is guaranteed simply because a request was submitted.

If you ever have a concern about the assessment you received, our complaints process sits alongside, not instead of, your right to raise a concern about a specific doctor directly with the GMC. We would always prefer to resolve a concern ourselves first, but we will never suggest that a GMC-registered clinician's public accountability is somehow replaced by using our service.

Registered practitioners, not a call centre.

Every doctor is independently verified against their national medical council before they see a single patient - including for patients in Leeds.

Medical Certificates in Leeds: Common Questions

No. The assessment is completed online and reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK, so your location within the country makes no difference to the process or the price. This page exists because people search for their own city.

The first 7 calendar days of sickness absence are self-certified — no certificate is legally required during that window. From day 8 of continuous absence, your employer can require a fit note (Statement of Fitness for Work, form MED3), submitted as soon as reasonably possible under their sickness policy.

Our certificate is €34.99 flat, including the doctor's review, the PDF and its verification reference. A private GP visit in the UK commonly falls in the €50-€120 range. It is not a substitute for care — if you need to be examined or treated, see a GP.

Not necessarily — since July 2022, a registered nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist or occupational therapist can also issue a UK fit note, alongside GPs. Our own certificates are reviewed and issued by a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK.

Same day, usually within 30 minutes of the doctor approving your case during business hours. Some cases take longer where the doctor needs more information before deciding.

Some do, particularly after an injury or illness, for higher-intensity programming, or where an operator's insurer requires it. It is the operator's requirement rather than a national rule, so the requirement and the wording come from them. Sports Fitness is EUR 34.99 and records a doctor's assessment that nothing identified prevents you taking part in the activity you have described. If the gym has its own pre-participation form, ask whether that specific form has to be completed — some will only accept their own.

An approved certificate carries a verification reference, which lets whoever received it confirm the issuer and the date rather than take your word for it. In practice that is what a querying employer usually wants — confirmation the document is genuine. What verification cannot do is convert it into a statutory MED3 after the fact. So it settles the authenticity question, not the separate question of whether the policy requires the statutory form.

In practice, yes. Contractual sick pay schemes can and often do set stricter evidence requirements than the statutory minimum, because the employer is paying above it and sets the conditions for doing so. That can mean earlier documentation, particular forms, or occupational health involvement. Read the scheme rules rather than the statutory position, and where the scheme names the statutory form, treat ours as supporting evidence sitting alongside it.

Once. EUR 34.99 covers the doctor's review, the PDF and its verification reference, regardless of how many days the assessment covers. There is no daily rate and no extension fee. A separate, later assessment would be a separate certificate, because the doctor can only speak to what they assessed and when — but a single certificate covering a period is one charge, not one per day in that period.

Upload the PDF exactly as issued rather than a screenshot or a retyped summary, because the verification reference is what makes it checkable. Portals normally date-stamp receipt, which matters when the policy says evidence must be provided as soon as reasonably practicable — the timestamp is your record that you did. Large Leeds employers, including the public-sector head offices in the city, tend to log evidence centrally rather than with your line manager, so send it where the policy says and tell your manager you have.
