Getting a Medical Certificate in Liverpool

Liverpool is Merseyside's largest city, historically built around its port and now a significant centre for culture and tourism alongside its more traditional employer base. Whatever the sector, the fit note requirement is the same across all of them; what varies is how each employer wants it submitted.

The University of Liverpool is one of the city's established institutions, and illness affecting study is typically handled through a formal process with its own evidence requirements, set at department or faculty level.

The service has no Liverpool premises behind it: everything happens online, and a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK looks at your case the same way regardless of where in the UK you're submitting it from. Being too unwell to travel across Liverpool for an appointment is, if anything, the reason to use it.

Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen and the Royal Liverpool sit within Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which has more than 12,000 employees and is one of the largest employers in the region. Alder Hey Children's, Liverpool Heart and Chest and Liverpool Women's are separate foundation trusts that sit alongside it within the wider NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group. For a patient that structure is background noise; for someone trying to get a document out of the system it is the whole problem, because the first question is which organisation actually holds the record you need, and the answer is often not the one you were treated at most recently.

Liverpool's working patterns make the standard eight o'clock scramble for a GP appointment particularly awkward. Jaguar Land Rover's Halewood plant has at points run 24-hour, three-shift operation to keep pace with global demand, adjusting the pattern since; the Port of Liverpool employs around 1,200 people, roughly 850 of them at the container terminal; AstraZeneca's Speke site has around 400 staff producing an influenza vaccine in partnership with a sister site in Philadelphia; and Liverpool John Lennon Airport handled around 5.6 million passengers in 2025. Night shifts, rotating patterns and continuous operations all mean the hours when you can report an absence and the hours when a surgery answers the phone barely overlap.

Port, culture and tourism

Liverpool's employer base spans its port and logistics heritage alongside culture, tourism and services. The fit note requirement is the same across all of them; the submission process is set by each employer.

University of Liverpool

Illness affecting coursework, exams or a placement is typically handled through a formal process, with evidence requirements set by the department.

Clubs and organisations

Sports clubs and gyms across Liverpool may ask for medical clearance before participation. Requirements are set by the club or organiser, not nationally.

Assessed the same way everywhere

There is no Liverpool premises behind this — your case is reviewed the same way regardless of where in the city, or the country, you're based.

All Certificate Types Available in the UK

Every certificate type is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor against UK requirements. Choose the one that matches your situation. Most UK requests fall into one of these categories, and if you're not sure which applies, our assessment will ask enough questions to route you to the right one before you pay anything.

How It Works in the UK

  1. Complete assessment

3-5 minutes. Select your certificate type, confirm the UK as your country, and answer relevant health questions covering your condition, the dates you need covered, and any employer or institution details you'd like included. No payment yet. You're only charged if a certificate is issued.

  2. GMC-registered doctor reviews

Reviewed against UK requirements during UK business hours (9am-6pm GMT/BST, Monday-Friday). The doctor may request more information through the same portal, or in rare cases advise that your situation needs an in-person examination rather than an online certificate.

  3. Receive your PDF

Emailed same day, usually within 30 minutes of approval, with doctor credentials, GMC number, and a verification reference your employer, school, or institution can scan to confirm authenticity directly.

Who Asks for a Medical Certificate in Liverpool

Liverpool employers

A certificate from a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK can stand as your Statement of Fitness for Work (fit note) once one is due, under Statutory Sick Pay rules. Your employer's sickness policy sets the practical detail.

Universities and colleges

Commonly requested as supporting evidence where illness has affected coursework, exams or a placement. Each institution sets its own requirements.

Clubs and gyms

Liverpool sports clubs and gyms may ask for medical clearance before participation or membership. The club or organiser sets the requirement.

Insurers and other bodies

General medical certificates for insurance claims and similar administrative purposes. What matters is that a genuine medical assessment took place.

Private GP visit costs are typical ranges reported by UK private clinics and vary by location and provider.

The gap between our pricing and a typical private GP visit reflects the difference in overhead between a walk-in clinic appointment and an online assessment. You're paying for the doctor's review and the certificate itself, not a consultation room, receptionist time, or travel. NHS GP appointments are free at the point of use but are not designed to issue same-day private documentation for insurance, travel, or sport, which is why most people in this position turn to a private route regardless of price.

Our UK Medical Team

Every UK certificate is reviewed by a doctor registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Registration numbers are shown on your certificate and can be independently verified on the GMC website. There is no need to take our word for a doctor's credentials when the public register confirms them directly.

A clinician will only issue a certificate after genuinely assessing your case, based on the health information you provide and, where needed, follow-up questions. If a certificate is not clinically appropriate, for example if your case needs an in-person examination or further investigation, the doctor will decline to issue one and you receive a full, automatic refund. We do not operate on a pay-first, questions-later basis: no certificate is guaranteed simply because a request was submitted.

If you ever have a concern about the assessment you received, our complaints process sits alongside, not instead of, your right to raise a concern about a specific doctor directly with the GMC. We would always prefer to resolve a concern ourselves first, but we will never suggest that a GMC-registered clinician's public accountability is somehow replaced by using our service.

Registered practitioners, not a call centre.

Every doctor is independently verified against their national medical council before they see a single patient - including for patients in Liverpool.

Medical Certificates in Liverpool: Common Questions

No. The assessment is completed online and reviewed by a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK, so your location within the country makes no difference to the process or the price. This page exists because people search for their own city.

The first 7 calendar days of sickness absence are self-certified — no certificate is legally required during that window. From day 8 of continuous absence, your employer can require a fit note (Statement of Fitness for Work, form MED3), submitted as soon as reasonably possible under their sickness policy.

Our certificate is €34.99 flat, including the doctor's review, the PDF and its verification reference. A private GP visit in the UK commonly falls in the €50-€120 range. It is not a substitute for care — if you need to be examined or treated, see a GP.

Not necessarily — since July 2022, a registered nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist or occupational therapist can also issue a UK fit note, alongside GPs. Our own certificates are reviewed and issued by a doctor registered to assess cases in the UK.

Same day, usually within 30 minutes of the doctor approving your case during business hours. Some cases take longer where the doctor needs more information before deciding.

It is the right type of document: Return to Work, EUR 34.99, records a doctor's assessment that there is no identified reason you cannot resume the work you have described. What it is not is the whole process. For shift, night or safety-critical work, many Liverpool employers run their own occupational health review before you are back on a line or on the quay, and that assessment covers the specific task in a way ours does not. Ours does not set adjusted duties or a phased return either.

It records that an assessment was carried out and by whom, and a remote clinical review is what it was. If your employer asks how the assessment was done, say exactly that — it is a normal answer and a truthful one. The thing that would genuinely undermine the document is implying a physical examination happened when it did not. A doctor is also expected to decline where a case cannot be assessed properly without examining you, which is the point of the safeguard.

Those are two separate decisions and it is worth not conflating them. Accepting your evidence is about whether they believe the absence was genuine; whether you are paid depends on Statutory Sick Pay eligibility, which is a statutory scheme with its own rules on GOV.UK, and on whatever contractual sick pay your contract provides. An employer can be satisfied with your documentation and still apply a policy that gives you nothing above the statutory position. Check the pay question against your contract rather than the evidence question.

No — EUR 34.99 is flat across all six certificate types and does not scale with the length of the absence. But the honest advice for a single day is to check first whether you need to buy anything at all, because a great many employers only require self-certification for a short absence and will not ask for a certificate. Spend the money when the policy actually asks for medical evidence, or when you want a dated, verifiable record for your own file.

As soon as you know you will be off, rather than at the end of a night shift. Cases are accepted around the clock but reviewed when a doctor is on shift, so a submission made at three in the morning is usually decided during the following working day. With roughly 850 people at the container terminal alone, absence there is reported into a rota rather than to someone available in office hours, so the two timelines you are managing — telling your employer and getting the assessment done — do not have to happen at the same moment.
